Range, battery & charging
BYD offers two different battery types for the Dolphin hatchback - a 44.9kWh unit and a larger 60.4kWh option - the former offers up to 193 miles on a full charge, with the larger of the two giving up to 265 miles, with power ranging from 93bhp to 204bhp.
Both versions take advantage of BYD’s clever ‘Blade’ battery technology that brings not just enhanced EV range for the Dolphin, but also better ergonomics for the cabin’s occupants to take advantage of.
At home, you’ll see a 0-100% charge time of around seven hours for the 44.9kWh Dolphin and about six hours for the 60.4kWh alternative - meanwhile, a 10-80% rapid charge takes no more than 40 minutes for either version.
As an added bonus, a heat pump comes as standard, meaning your air conditioning will draw less power from the Dolphin’s battery when in use.
Design
As the BYD Dolphin has been built as an EV from the ground up, the hatchback doesn’t fall victim to compromises like its rivals might do, and instead the BYD designers can maximise its wheelbase and interior capacity.
Sitting on the same underpinnings as the Atto 3, the Dolphin is just as conventional as its SUV counterpart in terms of usability and layout.
The Dolphin’s cabin is certainly where the BYD design team was able to be adventurous with flourishes of colour and contemporary cues, with the dash and interiors door panels adorned with stylish touches.
For a small car, the Dolphin offers a very useful 345 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,310 litres with the rear seats down.
